Recently, I was in the passenger seat riding through a storm. As I looked back, the sky was brilliant – a mixture of rich, deep blues and dark gray. When I turned around to face the front of the vehicle, the view ahead was amazingly in great contrast! The sun was shining bright, the sky had no hint of overcast and the ground didn’t have a trace of precipitation. I quickly looked behind us again, sho’nuff the storm was there!
As if there were neon blinking lights flashing, the message was this: As God is brining us out of the storm, stop looking back. Look ahead to the bright and beautiful future to which He is leading us.
You can honor the past, respect it, learn from it, recognize the beauty of it, and, as you read this, I pray you are healed from it. But, dear friend, know this: You are being led away from yesterday into something new.
I recall another time when I was driving and happened to gaze in the rear view mirror just a little too long that it almost caused an accident. It’s the same concept with our daily lives, we shouldn’t dwell on our past, otherwise we will ruin the beautiful things that are being prepared for us (there are even opportunities unfolding before us now).
One song that really inspires me and underscores this message is Moving Forward by Israel Houghton. Listen to the song:
