Voice Your Vision

You Have Influence, Use It

Protestor with bullhorn

It is important to shine the spotlight on darkness, but once we are aware of the issues that need to be addressed, then what’s next?

There is a role for everyone in bringing about change. Protesting has gotten a lot of attention, as it should (and it is needed!). Moreover, there are additional, critical methods to bringing about change. There is so much you can do to persuade thinking, change hearts, create policy, and offer tangible resources. All of these things work together and contribute toward the greater good most of us seek.

If you feel a bit overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem, just take the first step by doing one of the following:

  • Donate to an advocacy group. Financially supporting an organization that has the expertise, resources, and proven track record is a great way to advance your cause. A few of my favorite organizations are the NAACPSave the Children Action Network, the political advocacy arm of Save the Children; Smile Train; and the local food bank in my area.
  • Contact your elected officials. Call, email, send a letter, or tag them on social media to express your concerns and expectation for your elected official to take action. Tip: There are many templates you can use to help you eloquently articulate your position. However, speaking from the heart and personal experience is best!
  • Share your perspective. You are likely surrounded by people who respect you and value your opinion. These same people may also be unaware and misinformed. You are in an unique position to broaden their outlook and inspire them to get involved.
